TRE
Tension Release Exercises

I can not imagine many who can not benefit from TRE, as it is a natural, inbuilt tension release process, similar to the immune system. I have shared TRE with office workers, mothers, children, athletes, yogis, reiki/energy practitioners, meditators and even a shaman.

TRE & Neurogenic Tremors

Neurogenic tremors or vibrations are our nervous systems natural, therapeutic way of releasing tension from the body.

TRE allows us to consciously activate this long forgotten process.

From the ground up

Nikola Tesla suggests that energy, frequency and vibration are at the foundation of our entire universe, and similarly, neurogenic tremors are our nervous systems first defence in response to stress/tension via body tremors or vibrations. This is an intrinsic response that all animals and human beings have access to instantly, it is a "Recovery Reflex."

Therapeutic

It is important to understand that neurogenic tremors are therapeutic, in other words they assist and are beneficial for our physical, emotional and psychological well being, as opposed to tremors from Parkinson's for example, which have no benefit to the individual.

Familiar in everyday examples

Body tremors are not new to us, whenever we feel cold or have a fever, our bodies will shiver/tremor. Tremors are also present when we are nervous, anxious or excited and can come up in meditation, yoga, breath work or kundalini activations.

Reconecting

Via TRE, we can consciously reconnect with our nervous system's capacity to down regulate and come out of fight/flight/freeze mode, release that which is not serving us and ultimately achieve a more integrated, relaxed and balanced system.

1.The tremor mechanism in the human body appears to be an essential component of our self-regulatory system.

 

2.This implies that all humans have a right to this self-regulating human mechanism as a means of supporting self-care.

 

3.TRE is about teaching this mechanism to others and guiding them to learn how to use this ‘new’ body mechanism in a safe and effective manner to support self-care.​

 

Dr David Berceli

What is TRE?

TRE stands for Tension Release Exercises and was founded by Dr David Berceli.  Dr Berceli had worked extensively in war torn areas and disaster zones and noticed the natural tremor mechanism in response to stress or shock. 

​

Dr Berceli used this information and his therapeutic body work expertise to design a set of simple exercises called "lead in exercises ", followed by "quick start exercises" which together evoke our body's natural tremor mechanism (neurogenic tremors).

​

In this way we are able to utilise neurogenic tremors to release stress, tension or trauma that was not able to be released at the time of the event.

Treatment

Why TRE

Awarness

Personally I find that our bodies are miraculous in their functions, many of which we are totally unaware of.  Via TRE we  become aware of our bodies ability to tremor therapeutically.  Having an awareness of our capacity to heal mentally, emotionally and physically via neurogenic tremors is empowering.  Awareness allows us to work with this beautiful process rather than be against it.

Simplicity

Once we become accustomed to TRE, application is instant.  There is no ritual, preparation, warm up necessary (although these can be effectivelly integrated).  There is also no learning required, simply allowing the internal intelligence to release what is no longer of service to us.

Simplicity also means that TRE is efficient and can be accessible by many.

Effectiveness

This is natures way, the way our system was meant to work from day one, and nature is efficient, effective. Nature  does not hold to anything that does not serve, and knows how to release and in what order.

On a personal level, I utilise TRE to quickly relax my mind when it is racing, chaotic, especially in the middle of the night when I would rather sleep than think about all my problems.

Integration with Meditation/Yoga

I love how neurogenic tremors integrate seamlessly alongside meditation, yoga, reiki, spinal energetics or breath-work, rather than a modality which is instead of.  Most often in meditation I will naturally experience  spontaneous neurogenic tremors, while activating the tremors via TRE will often lead into a more calm, meditative mind.

Tension/Trauma
Release

In my experience I see Tension/Trauma as contraction in the body.  A headache, an emotional hurt, an unresolved mental situation equates to tension/contraction. TRE is a simple and effective way to engage our natural tension release mechanism in the form of neurogenic tremors. 

Expansion

As we release tension from our system, more energy can flow.  Increased energy aids a more harmonious and resilient mental & emotional state of being as well as an increase in physical capacity and spiritual unfoldment.  We start to experience an overall expansion of consciousness.

Learning TRE

Learning TRE is easy, and once learned, it can be utilised as a self care tool for ever.

Learning TRE is easy because the initial exercises are simple, gentle and easy to perform, while the neurogenic tremors which are activated are intuitive, spontaneous, effortless.

​

TRE utilise a series of gentle stretches called "lead in exercises"to get our bodies ready to release, followed by 5 simple positions or "quick start positions" which activate the natural tremor mechanism in the body.

​

We only need to activate the tremors, the body knows "how to", so it becomes an effortless practice.

Introduction to TRE One on One

It is recommended to allow up to 5 initial sessions to become comfortable with our nervous system and to make it a regular self care practice.

In these sessions the aim is to gently introduce neurogenic tremors to an individuals psychology and physiology. 

The focus is to develop the capacity to:

  • activate the tremor mechanism

  • be aware of somatic markers

  • stop the tremors at will

  • build capacity 

  • practice regularly

TRE exploration One on One

For those already tremoring comfortably but would like more guidance around bracing, alternate positions, specific topics and overall deepening.  Intuitive Reiki can be incorporated for added support and guidance.

The focus is to:

  • going deeper

  • explore new positions

Learning TRE in group setting

We are social creatures and when it comes to regulating our nervous system, being in a group setting can be beneficial and fun. Group sessions are also a more affordable mens of trying TRE and maintaining a regular practice under the supervision of a practitioner.

The focus of group sessions:

  • activate the tremor mechanism

  • be aware of somatic markers

  • stop the tremors at will

  • build capacity 

  • practice regularly

TRE online

For those that would like introduction or exploration of TRE from the comfort of their own homes, sessions via Zoom can be arranged.

Depending on the individual needs, the focus can be around:

  • be aware of somatic markers

  • going deeper
